What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a long-lasting tooth replacement option best for replacing one or a couple of teeth. Every implant replaces a single tooth and is installed directly into the gums, where it can naturally fuse with your jawbone. This allows it to provide a high level of stability compared to other options.

Since each dental implant is custom-made, it will look and feel just like a natural tooth. We match the size, shape, and color so it can become a seamless part of your smile.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants come with a range of benefits, including:

  • Preventing further bone loss caused by a missing tooth
  • Allows for full bite force
  • Prevent changes in facial structure due to missing teeth
  • Speech is easy and natural
  • Long-lasting (lasts for years or permanently if cared for well)
  • Provides support for the adjacent teeth

What Is the Process Like?

While it is possible to get dental implants in a day, it typically takes a couple of visits to deliver optimal results. First, we need to exam your mouth and understand your unique situation. We listen to your goals and check to see if implants are a viable solution. This includes examining the area and taking x-rays. If you are a suitable candidate for dental implants, we can take impressions of your target area and have your implant inserted. However, if your jawbone isn’t sturdy enough yet, you may first require a bone grafting procedure to get it ready.

Once the implant is inserted, it will begin to naturally fuse with your jawbone. In the meantime, we send off the impressions of your mouth to our lab. Using these impressions, they can create a tooth that perfectly matches the natural look of your teeth.

Next we place the abutment. This is the piece that stands between the implant and the crown (the tooth part). The next step is adding your crown. For some patients, this part might take two visits, but it often can be performed in one.

Overall, you can expect between two to four visits. It might take some time, but the results are worth it, as dental implants are generally a permanent solution to tooth loss. Treat your implants well and they can stay with you for your whole life.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

The first step to see if dental implants are right for you is to come into our office for an appointment. We can examine your mouth and help you decide what tooth replacement option will be best for you.

Dental implants may be for you if:

  • You want a long-lasting solution that looks and feels natural
  • You want to replace one or a smaller number of teeth
  • Your jaw has sufficient bone mass to support an implant

However, even if you currently do not have enough bone mass to hold an implant, this can still be an option for you. With a bone grafting procedure, you can build up enough mass to work with an implant.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implants can support more than just crowns, they can also serve as anchors for specialized dentures. Traditional dentures come with a range of setbacks, including:

  • Becoming dislodged
  • Wearing down your gums
    interfering with speech

Implant-supported dentures aim to correct those issues by providing a sturdy foundation for dentures. Using between two to four implants, you can support an entire row of dentures.

All-On-4 Dental Implants

If you need to replace an entire row of teeth, all-on-4 dental implants may be what you need. These deliver all the stability of dental implants, but with the complete restoration offered by dentures.

Traditional dentures can be displaced or knocked out easily, but all-on-4 utilizes the same dental implant technique to ensure your replacement teeth are correctly affixed.

The metallic implants are strategically placed into either your upper or lower jaw. They then serve as anchors for your replacement set of teeth. You no longer have to worry about dislodged teeth after that. This procedure can be applied to your top row or bottom row of teeth.

The primary qualification for all-on-4 dental implants is a proper amount of bone mass. Your jaw must have a sufficient amount of bone to hold and fuse to the metal implant posts. If you do not have enough, a bone grafting procedure may be applied.
