What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
The ADA describes a dental emergency as a situation that is “potentially life-threatening and requires [s] immediate treatment” or involves “severe pain or infection.” Essentially, if your overall health is in danger, or you are in so much pain you cannot realistically wait for a scheduled appointment, then it’s something we need to handle right away.
For example, a chipped, broken, or knocked-out tooth would be considered a dental emergency. Extruding or partially dislodged teeth are very hazardous and likely very painful, which is why you should always give us a call. Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Whether it’s the result of an unexpected injury or improper oral hygiene, dental emergencies all have one thing in common: they need expert treatment and fast. A mild toothache or a lost filling is not considered an emergency, but there’s no reason to wait if you are in extreme pain. We will get you into treatment right away.
If you find that you have suffered a dental injury or another emergency, keep the following things in mind to maximize our ability to help treat your condition.
- If you find yourself dealing with tooth pain, you should first check to make sure nothing is lodged between your teeth or underneath your gum line. If an object is present, you should first carefully try to remove it with a toothpick or dental floss. If this does not alleviate the issue, you may need to visit our dental office to have the offending object removed.
- If your tooth has broken due to an injury, our doctors recommend that you hold onto the broken pieces. Make sure they are rinsed off and brought to our dental clinic as soon as possible. There may still be time to make your tooth whole again.
- If your tooth has been completely knocked out of your mouth, try and hold onto it (hold it by the crown, not the root). Rinse it off, so it isn’t dirty, but try to avoid removing any tissue fragments. Call our office and drive down for your emergency appointment. We may still be able to save your tooth!.

Other Oral Injuries
Your teeth are not the only things you can injure. If the soft tissues in your mouth, such as your gums, lips, tongue, or cheeks, are damaged, you may need the services of an emergency dentist.
If you have injured your tissue, we advise that you rinse your mouth out with a saltwater mix. Most of the time, you can control any bleeding or pain on your own. However, any bleeding that does not stop using gauze and pressure after fifteen or twenty minutes will need emergency attention.
Whatever the reason for your injury, we can take care of it. If you have a dental or oral emergency, don’t wait. Call as soon as possible
