What can I expect from the teeth whitening process?
First, Dr. Cho and Dr. Jeon make sure that your teeth are healthy enough for the procedure. In some cases, fillings will be necessary before the whitening process can begin. Afterward, we will assess the level to which your teeth are stained or discolored and inform you about the procedure’s necessary steps and costs.
Steps of teeth whitening
First, a record is made of the shade of your teeth. Your teeth are then polished to remove any plaque. Gauze is then used to keep your teeth dry, while retractors are applied to keep your lips and tongue away from the whitening solution. A barrier may be applied to your gum line to protect it as well. The fronts of your teeth are then coated with the whitening solution, which may need to be activated with a light or laser. The solution will then stay on your teeth for half an hour to an hour, or until the optimum shade is reached. Sometimes a fluoride mixture is applied to help with tooth sensitivity. It may take multiple visits to give you the shade you want.
Keep in mind that there are various teeth whitening options available for you, and we will go over them all. Some can be handled at home, some take longer than others, and they all vary in cost, ease, and reliability.

Laser Teeth Whitening
Laser teeth whitening can be a lot faster and produce better results than the standard whitening process. Your gums are protected with a resin-based barrier as your teeth are exposed to blue light for about fifteen minutes. More advanced treatment procedures involving less heat on the teeth are available, but these also require longer exposure time, usually around thirty minutes.
ZOOM Teeth Whitening
For a newer, more specialized teeth whitening process, consider ZOOM teeth whitening. This safe, high-speed process takes less than an hour and yields dramatic results. Ask us for more information.
The procedure begins by applying a gel to your teeth three to four times, for about 15 minutes each. As with the other procedures, your lips and gums will be shielded to ensure they are not bleached as well. The gel makes use of bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide, which will penetrate the enamel and oxygenate your teeth, whitening them.
Your teeth may be sensitive for the next day or so, and you may have to avoid certain foods for a few days, but the results will last for years.

Professional Bleaching Kit
Another standard cosmetic treatment is bleaching. At Monte Vista Dental Group, this is administered by Dr. Cho and Dr. Jeon, but it may also be done at home. During our appointment, we will determine if this is the proper treatment for your teeth. Generally, professional at-home whitening kits produce far more reliable results than standard over-the-counter brands. Most people who have used this treatment have reported a brighter, natural smile.
